Are WeeDo snowsuits sustainable?

Jan 14, 2025 · Kids Ski Wear

WeeDo Snowsuits emphasises sustainability in their snowsuits through several key practices:

  • Recycled Materials: They utilise fabrics made from recycled PET bottles, contributing to waste reduction and resource conservation.

  • PFC-Free Finishes: Their snowsuits feature PFC-free durable water-repellent (DWR) finishes, minimising environmental impact.

  • Ethical Manufacturing: WeeDo partners with manufacturers that pay fair wages, offer good working conditions, and use environmentally friendly processes, such as solar and water energy.

  • WeeGrow System: Their snowsuits are designed with adjustable sleeves and legs, allowing the garment to grow with the child and extending its usability over multiple seasons.

  • WeeCare Program: This initiative includes a return program for used clothing and a second-hand shop, promoting a circular economy and reducing waste.

ECONOMIC CIRCUIT

Their vision is to make new clothes out of old clothes. This works particularly well with synthetic fibers because they decompose much more slowly than natural fibers. In the future, old clothes should therefore be our new raw material. However, there is still a long way to go before we can produce new yarns from old polyester fabrics. Until then WeeDo are producing a large part of our fibres from recycled plastic bottles. Control Union controls the supply chain and certifies the resulting fibres with the Global Recycle Standard so that really second hand purchases are made.

DRINKING WATER WITHOUT CHEMICALS

Polluted waters, polluted air and polluted soils - the global environmental pollution as a result of human activities is shown  to us more and more clearly and reduces our quality of life.

Bluesign certifies textile production that is gentle on water and soil - especially with regard to the chemicals used, which would otherwise have ended up in the water and thus in the soil and air. If these chemicals are not used from the start, they cannot end up in the wastewater either.

PFC FREE PRODUCTION

Exactly: PFC, for example, is a chemical that for a long time ensured that wastewater got into nature, which has poisoned the soil and drinking water. PFC contains phthalates that have been proven to be carcinogenic. They are difficult to separate from water and cause developmental damage to those who ingest it.
WeeDo wanted an alternative and have consistently opted for PFC-free production. The impregnation that makes their fabrics breathable is made of Eco-Teflon. Zelan ™ R3 is made from 60% renewable, plant-based raw materials, with non-genetically modified organisms (GMO) and without substances from the food chain. Zelan ™ R3 is certified as a bio-based product by the USDA.

TESTED FREE OF POLLUTIONS

Why Oeko Tex? Better safe than sorry! If a textile article has been awarded the STANDARD 100 label, you can be sure that all components, including all threads, buttons and other accessories, have been tested for harmful substances. The product is certified according to the OekoTex standard and is therefore harmless to health.

FAIR TRADE

The key word here are the production conditions under which production takes place. It is nowhere near enough to just buy innovative technologies! Workers are the ones who love WeeDo products. That's why they have to have a good life. Otherwise love won't work. In the factories there are canteens, e-scooters as company vehicles, occupational safety and social security.
Last but not least: a comparably above-average pay. The factories are certified by the BSCI standard.
Maintaining relationships with sewers, sample technicians and factory owners is a top priority for WeeDo.
